In this self-portrait, “de los Reyes,” Jay vibrantly showcases Filipino culture and history that have been largely absent from mainstream representation in North American media. Cabalu is shown hoisting a massive can of SPAM over his head, a food who’s prominence in the Philippines is rooted in American colonialism as it was first introduced during WWII as a military ration to American soldiers based in the Philippines. The Grizzlies jersey he wears, references the short-lived Vancouver basketball team that emerged in the 90’s when Cabalu was a child, but is now owned by an American team. “de los Reyes” reveals the complexities of cultural identities that are entrenched in popular culture and American globalization.
This work appears on the cover of Canadian Culinary Imaginations published by McGill Queens University Press, 2020.
